Your favorite summer foods may not be helping you beat the heat.
Typical summer foods, like ice cream, may cause your body to work harder, according to Michelle Dudash, author of "Clean Eating for Busy Families."
Foods you least expect may help cool you off.
"You think hamburgers, you're thinking hot dogs, those are all the summer time favorites. Funnel cakes. The carnival foods. Those are really hard for your body to digest, " said Dudash.
"Hot foods like soups, for example. Coffee and tea...what these can do is actually sweat a little. So as long as you're in a dry area where's there's dry heat, it's gonna make you sweat a little, and then as the evaporation process happens, the body does that to cool you off," said Dudash.
Dudash says the body works more efficiently at keeping you cool when it's properly hydrated. Fruits and vegetables can help towards that goal.
"We know water is really good for keeping us hydrated, but also think about foods. That all counts towards your fluid intake. For example, fruits and vegetables. Some fruits and vegetables contain over 90 percent water," said Dudash.
Certain foods like tomatoes, carrots, green tea, and dark chocolate contain nutrients that can help protect you from the sun.
Now while it's important, of course, to use sun screen and still stay in the shade, certain foods can help your body block those sun rays. So you're less likely to get that redness, which can also contribute to feeling hot," said Dudash. "What they do is absorb, they concentrate into the skin, and actually help reflect those sun rays."
Dudash says alcohol is a diuretic and should be consumed in moderation, although some studies have suggested the tannins in red wine may carry a cooling effect.
