Maria Sharapova withdraws from U.S. Open

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Former U.S. Open champion Maria Sharapova has withdrawn from this year's tournament because of a shoulder injury.

"We wish her a speedy recovery and look forward to her return to New York next year," David Brewer, the tournament director, said in a statement.

Sharapova told U.S. Open officials that she is suffering from shoulder bursitis.

The 2006 singles champ was seeded No. 3. Her withdrawal elevates Agnieszka Radwanska to third seed and all remaining seeded players move up one position, said tourney referee Brian Earley.

The U.S. Open, played at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens, runs from August 26 through September 9.
