Severely beaten boy remains on life support, suspect charged

Authorities say a two-year-old remains in critical condition after he suffered a severe beating at the hands of his mother's boyfriend.

Family members say Damian Sutton remains on life support at Children's Hospital in Detroit Friday after he was beaten Tuesday inside his mom's Washington Twp. apartment. Medical personnel say Damian suffered severe head trauma consistent with "shaken baby syndrome."

On Friday, authorities charged 26-year-old Ronald Dimambro Jr. with first-degree child abuse.

Joseph Sutton, Damian's uncle, tells FOX 2 Dimambro claimed the toddler sustained his injuries when he fell out of his playpen. Authorities say the 911 call for Damian initially reported an asthma attack. "Come to find out he had been punched and kicked and repeatedly beaten in the abdominal area," said Joseph Sutton.

Family members say Damian was discovered with wounds all over his body and immediately transferred to Henry Ford Hospital in Macomb. He was then airlifted to Children's Hospital in Detroit.

"I don't even know how or why you can look at a child and just hurt him that bad," said Damian's mother Nikki Sutton, who was told about the alleged attack while she was at work.

"It just frustrates you and it makes you appalled that adults would harm a young child that could not defend himself," Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham told FOX 2 by phone.

"I'm not leaving this hospital until he recovers," said Nikki Sutton. "His dad is here. Everyone is here for him."

Family members say a fund has been established through Fifth Third Bank to assist with medical expenses. Those interested can visit any Fifth Third Bank branch and donate "for the benefit of Damian Sutton."
