TEMPE, Ariz. -

Authorities say two people suffered critical injuries after a car collided with a light-rail train in Tempe near the Loop 101 freeway.

Tempe police say the crash occurred near Apache Boulevard and Price Road at about 11:35 a.m. Thursday when the train hit the driver's side of a sedan.

Tempe Fire Department crews extricated a 65-year-old man and the second person from the sedan. Their names haven't been released, but police say they were transported to a Tempe hospital.

"The car was next to me.. he had swerved over into the left lane.. it was a red light and the light rail was this way and he turned right in front of the light rail and got dragged," said Brittany Cooper, who witnessed the crash.  "It was like errrrrr, pow!  He got dragged I'd say about 50 feet."

Police say traffic restrictions have been lifted and light-rail trains have resumed normal operations on the Tempe route.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
