Save the Bees: Population decline affects food on your table

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

What's all the buzz about bees? Beekeepers and environmentalists are sounding the alarm about a bee pesticide. An advocate group held a news conference at Navy Pier on Wednesday.

The Independent Garden Center Show is being held at the pier this week. The event is sponsored by Bayer, a major producer of the pesticide.

Environmentalists are concerned about the dwindling bee population and its impact on flowers and crops. Bayer said the pesticide is safe.

Bees made the cover of TIME magazine, because new reports say 30% of honeybees have died in the last 50 years. Whole Foods just released a new campaign showing what their markets would look like without the work of bees, and buses around Chicago are also wrapped in signs with the shocking statistic.

Garfield Park Conservatory beekeeping program coordinator Naaman Gambill joined Good Day Chicago Thursday morning to explain what's happening to the honey bee population, how the decline directly affects our food, why we should care about this problem and how you can learn more.

Most importantly, Gamble explained why we need to save the bees.
