Suspect in Brunswick baby death talks about shooting

Posted: Updated:
COBB COUNTY, Ga. -

A 15-year-old charged with murdering a baby in Brunswick says even he was surprised when the shooter fired his gun.

Police arrested De'Marquise  Elkins and Dominique Lang in the shooting death of 13-month-old Antonio Santiago in March. Authorities said that the two were attempting to rob the baby's mother, Sherry West.

Elkins is currently on trial in the fatal shooting. The trial is being held in Cobb County due to the attention the case received.

On Wednesday, during a motions hearing while the jury was out of the courtroom, Lang told a judge that he had just met Elkins minutes before the shooting.

Lang said that he and Elkins were walking down a Brunswick street when they saw West and her baby in a stroller. Lang said that Elkins quickly confronted West.

"He asked her for her purse. She kept refusing," said Lang.

Lang, who is also charged with murder, said that his older acquaintance, who he had only seen around the neighborhood, was persistent.

"He slapped her with the gun….He threatened the baby," said Lang.

The 15-year-old said that even he couldn't believe what happened next.

"He came around the stroller, she came around the other way and he shot," Lang said. "She said, ‘Help, help.' And I turned my head and heard the third shot."

Lang is expected to be a key witness for the state.

Elkins' lawyers wanted to throw out Lang's identification of Elkins as the trigger man during a police interview; the judge ruled the testimony will be allowed.
