Medals Waiting To Be Reunited With Veteran

Posted: Updated:
CHADDS FORD, Pa. -

Joan Greco doesn't know the full story of the mysterious fighting man she's looking for. She does not know where he fought or what he did. She only knows that he deserves the medals he earned.

"Whoever received these served our country and obviously was a decorated veteran." says Joan.

The building that sits at 2610 South Juniper Street in South Philadelphia now houses a barber shop. But back in the mid 90s, Joan and her husband Michael owned the place. They were cleaning the basement that they were preparing to sell.

"My husband was inside cleaning and he found those in the rafters of the building," she says

In the rafters, neatly framed, were a Distinguished Service Cross, a Purple Heart, a Silver Star, a Bronze Star, a World War Two service medal, and a small pin that reads in Italian: "Spiritual Assistance of Italian Soldiers."

Not knowing who owned the medals, the Greco's hung on to the medals and forgot about them. Until a recent basement clean up of their current home in Chadds Ford.

"We had them in a trunk. We opened the trunk and my son said, 'what are these?' and my husband related the story of how he found them," says Joan.

The framed medals were likely Ieft sometime in the 80s or early 90s. So I checked with neighbors near 2610 South Juniper to see if anyone remembered a World War II veteran living there during that time. No luck.

Then I called City Hall and reached Scott Brown, an aide to First District Councilman Mark Squilla. Brown specializes in veteran's affairs.

Brown narrowed our search for the medals' owner, providing us with several names of property owners at that South Juniper address.

It looks like we're probably looking for someone born around 1920, give or take a few years.

Back in Chadds Ford, Joan Greco waits, hoping for a happy reunion of man and medals.

"I know if it was myself or my family, I would want that part of our family history," says Joan.

That 2610 South Juniper address is a commercial site, so we're probably looking for a World War II vet who owned a business there, probably during the 1980s.
