Fire at Jersey City recycling plant

Posted: Updated:
NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

Firefighters are trying to gain the upper hand on a fire at a recycling plant in Jersey City.

The smoke from the blaze at Sims Metal Management Company is visible for miles.  The fire started late Monday night.

A four-story pile of metal is burning.  The fire apparently started at the bottom of the pile and crews are digging down into it with large machinery.

Police say that there have not been any injuries reported and no homes are in jeopardy.

The Jersey City fire department says there should not be any concern about toxic materials in the air.  They say that it will be an extended operation to completely put out the flames.

A 50-pound pile of metal and plastic burned at the plant for 12 hours in 2010.
