PHOENIX -

Police say they believe a man and a woman arrested for forgery may have targeted hundreds of people across Arizona.

43-year-old Stephen Wayne Ross and 47-years-old Shawna Norene Ross were arrested at a hotel near Elliot Road and Priest Drive on Thursday.

Both suspects had felony warrants for forgery related charges and have additional charges pending.

A search of their hotel room revealed stolen mail items from Phoenix, Tempe, Mesa and Sedona, a printer and other items used to forge checks, and illegal drugs.

Detectives also found a ledger containing the names of their victims, their dates of birth, social security numbers and bank account numbers.

"So far we believe there are at least 950 victims. We believe that number will certainly go over 1,000," said Phoenix Police Sgt. Tommy Thompson.

Police believe the suspects were mainly breaking into cluster mail boxes in apartment complexes. Their advice is not to let mail sit for even a day -- and don't leave personal information in your car.

Agents from the US Postal Inspection Service and officers from the Phoenix Police Department are investigating the full extent of the suspects' alleged crimes. Police say they plan to contact the victims they've identified.
