Number of weapons found at Atlanta airport concerns officials

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Officials at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport say that the number of weapons found in carry-on luggage is on the rise.

Last year, more guns – around 100 -- were confiscated at Atlanta's airport than any other in the county, according to General Manager Louis Miller.

"So far this year, we've already had 67 guns, so we are ahead of last year's pace," said Miller.

Federal Security Director Mary Leftridge-Byrd said that all the confiscations could cause delays to other travelers.

The airport has already added additional signs warning travelers about the restrictions.

Travelers can check unloaded firearms in checked baggage. Airline agents must be alerted to the firearm, FOX 5's Morse Diggs reports.

In addition to criminal charges, violators face fines ranging from $3,000 to $7,500.
