Police are still searching for the driver who hit and killed a man on a bicycle about 7 p.m. Tuesday and fled the scene.
The deadly collision happed near Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, near Ray and Sossaman, on a fairly new stretch of road with ample space for bikes.
68-year-old Richard Welck's 3-wheeled blue bike was crumpled. A pool of blood soaked into the pavement.
Welck was eastbound when he was hit -- the sun was behind the traffic and wasn't a factor.
The area is popular for cyclists, who coexist uneasily with cars and trucks. They've got space to ride, but they're vulnerable.
"I couldn't even imagine. It is absolutely horrible. How can you live with yourself knowing you have just killed somebody for the rest of your life... I couldn't imagine," says bicyclist Danny Eaton.
Mesa Police think the hit-and-run driver may have been driving a white SUV like a 2003 to 2006 Saturn Vue -- or something similar.
Welck is described as a transient with family out of state. They believe the vehicle that hit him suffered damage to the front passenger side.
If you come across the SUV, call the Mesa Police at (480) 644-2211. By calling Silent Witness at (480) WITNESS, you can remain anonymous and receive a cash award for tips leading to an arrest or indictment.
