EF-0 Tornado Damages Ocean County Neighborhoods

Posted: Updated:
MANAHAWKIN, N.J. -

Residents are using the T word for tornado, and the National Weather Service just confirmed that it was an EF-0 tornado that plowed through Ocean County this morning.

The winds literally sheared off the tops of trees right through a neighborhood and cut a path across the area. There are downed trees, downed light poles damaged rooftops, crushed cars with trees on top. The winds also did some serious damage at the Manahawkin Baptist Church.

Video FOX 29 obtained showed the windows literally blown out of the church. The roof came off, and people were inside at the time. Lots of folks were working around in the area, including the youth pastor who told us what he saw and what he heard when the storm and the heavy winds hit.

"The world got dark and suddenly it was like the pressure inside the church seemed like it was a vacuum and you could hear glass popping and shattering all over the place, and then all the emergency lights went on, and all the trees started laying down," describes Nathan Didlacke.

Power crews are currently working up the block. They have been working on Hilliard Boulevard all afternoon. There were 5500 people without power when this storm hit. Now the number is around 700.

Other storm victims also spoke to FOX 29 about their experiences.

"Wind picked up and all of a sudden it exceeded limits I've ever seen here. I mean windows were shaking, much of the building was shaking. Didn't understand what was taking place and saw lightning strikes and looked out shortly thereafter and the tree was gone," said Dr. Ed Parello.

"I look out the bathroom window. Everybody get in the basement now!" said Bonnie Calderone. "It was scary. It sounded like a train was coming through."
