GROSSE POINTE WOODS, Mich. (WJBK) -

They were cheering on the field in Indianapolis - and also under a tent at Grosse Pointe Woods City Hall where hundreds of people gathered for a viewing party to watch the team win.

"It's actually pretty exciting because I know some of the kids from school," said Shane Gafa.

"Most of my friends are on that team," added 12-year-old Noah White. "It's pretty cool that they get this far to the world series."

Pretty cool is right! The team is now in the record books. They're the first team from Grosse Pointe Woods Shores to make it to the Little League World Series since 1979 and only the eighth Michigan team to qualify since 1957.

"It's huge and yet I don't think the kids understand really what a big deal this is... yet!" said one coach.

But they will. And they have countless fans in their corner. Plus, one big player who's getting lots of attention. First baseman and pitcher Chad Lorkowski is 6'2" and weighs 200 pounds. The 12-year-old is bigger than many Detroit Tigers players. He hit two home runs including one in the first inning and also struck out 10 players in five innings on the mound. The Woods Shores team beat a Chicago team that was undefeated going into the game. They'll have a national TV audience when they take the field on Friday in Williamsport, PA. Stay with Fox 2 for updates on the team's progress!
