Chicago's first medical marijuana opens for business

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Chicago's first medical marijuana clinic opened Wednesday in the Wicker Park neighborhood.

It comes less than a week after Gov. Pat Quinn signed a measure legalizing medical marijuana in Illinois.

People were waiting at the clinic Wednesday morning even though purchasing medical marijuana won't be permitted until after Jan. 1, 2014.

Tammy Jacobi, owner of Good Intentions LLC, says the clinic has already been receiving many phone calls from people who want the opportunity to treat their medical symptoms with marijuana.

Jacobi, a registered nurse, says open registration begins Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for people interested in the treatment.

"We'll be informing people about the Illinois medical marijuana program. We're going to be establishing relationships with our doctor. We're encouraging patients to contact primary doctors first but we want people to know that we're here, they can talk to us, find out if medical marijuana may be right for them," Jacobi said.

Establishing a relationship with a doctor is required by law in Illinois before receiving medical marijuana.

Jacobi says medical conditions that can be treated by medical marijuana are not only limited to those with glaucoma and multiple sclerosis.

"There's pain and chronic pain that is not on the list although in Michigan that's on the list. That's one of the tighter regulations down here. But there are some things on the list like spinal cord injuries so even back pain works. There are things we have to verify with other doctors, but there's lupus, residual limb pain, Tourette's syndrome. There's a lot of things," Jacobi said.

Jacobi says that while they're still waiting for the state of Illinois to work out the process on how a patient can receive their license to receive medical marijuana, the will work with patients to establish a relationship with their doctor in the meantime.
