Rain washes out roads, floods creeks in Gilmer Co.

GILMER COUNTY, Ga. -

Heavy rain slammed Gilmer County again on Wednesday as residents were still trying to get over the damage from last week's flooding.

The storms closed roads and flooded creeks.

For the pastures at Build and Ark Animal Shelter, that meant scary times as floodwaters threatened their pastures.

"This morning, when I got up, it was coming up fast – very fast. So we got the animals in the high parts of the pastures," Littlejohn said.

The rising waters and strong currents destroyed fences and moved heavy piles of wood.

No animals were hurt. They got to high ground, but Susan is concerned about more storms expected to arrive on Wednesday night. That's why the Department of Agriculture came out to move the horses to other pastures.

"We're going to find places to move them too, and we have friends that have pastures and they'll take them," said Littlejohn.

Georgia Emergency Agency officials said about 10 roads were closed across Gilmer County.

While there were no reports of injuries, water rescue teams had to conduct several rescues.

"We are looking at six to seven inches just this morning," said Crystal Paulk-Buchanan of GEMA.  "Another front is probably going to come through this evening. We are looking at two more weather systems coming through tonight and that has us pretty concerned. We've already had quite a day."
