Diego Luna: It's A Fresh View On Cinema

Posted: Updated:

Diego Luna says actors can usually tell whether the movies they're considering are going to be good or bad. But only if they pay attention to the signs.

Diego ignored the negative signs for one movie script he read, "Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights," and now he's sorry he made it.

But, he says he always knew that his current movie, "Elysium" was going to be something special.  One of his favorite recent films was director Neill Blomkamp's 2009 sci-fi film, "District 9," so when the opportunity arose to work with Blomkamp on "Elysium," he jumped at the chance.

Diego joins Steve Edwards and Maria Sansone on Good Day L.A.

Fun Facts About Diego Luna:

  • He is a Mexican actor known for his childhood telenovela work, a starring role in the film Y tu mamá también, and supporting roles in American films.
  • Luna co-founded the organization and film festival Ambulante A.C. along with his friend Gael Garcia Bernal. The organization works to bring documentary films to places where they are rarely shown. Ambulante was awarded the Washington Office on Latin America's prestigious Human Rights Award in 2011.
  • From an early age, Luna began acting in television, film, and theatre. His debut was in the 1982 film, Antonieta.
  • He is currently making a name for himself in the United States market, having starred alongside Jon Bon Jovi in Vampires: Los Muertos (2002) and the Academy Award-winning Frida (2002). He was also in the western Open Range, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, The Terminal, and Criminal. In 2008, he appeared in the Harvey Milk biopic Milk playing Milk's emotionally unstable lover Jack Lira.
  • In June 2012, he began directing Chávez, a biopic about the life of American labor leader César Chávez, who founded the United Farm Workers. It is the first English-language film Luna has directed.
