Woman Successfully Swims 13 Miles Across Delaware Bay

Posted: Updated:
FORTESCUE, N.J. -

It was  festive day at Fortescue Beach for sightseeing.

"I  see a couple boats. That might be the one," said one person with binoculars.

But the  sightseers didn't come looking for seagulls or rare ocean life--

They're using their ocean front view to cheer on Meghan Wren.

"A woman crossing the bay. How many men can say they've done that

Just after seven Saturday  morning the 48-year-old Cumberland County, New Jersey  woman started her 13 mile swim from Port Mahon, Delaware.

"It's  pretty amazing! I wish I could do it," exclaimed one onlooker.

8 hours and 45 minutes later Wren reached the shore of Fortescue, New Jersey.

"I'm feeling spectacular," she said not even out of breath.

Wren  didn't battle the Delaware Bay  just to say she's the first.

She's raising money for her Bayshore Center at Bivalve. It's a museum and education center.

She's also trying to  bring awareness to the Delaware Bay. Areas surrounding Fortescue are still recovering from Hurricane Sandy but haven't gotten substantial funds like other New Jersey Shore areas.

"We have an amazing place here. I don't think it gets quite enough attention
or investment in its future.
