CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

When you're rich and famous in the internet age, just getting dinner can turn into scandal.

For example, on July 9, NFL star quarterback Drew Brees had Chinese food for dinner in San Diego. We know all that because after he paid for the food with his credit card, someone took a photo of the restaurant's copy of the receipt. Brees' name and signature are on it and you can see he left a $3 on $47 worth of food.

Whoever took the photo apparently took issue with the amount of the tip and the picture was forwarded to the scandal-breaking website "The Dirty."

"The Dirty" posted the photo beneath a headline proclaiming: "Saints quarterback Drew Brees is a cheap (bleep)." The site noted that $3 on a $74 tab is a tip of less than a 5 percent.

That's what was reported on the website, however, the full story reveals that Drew Brees' Chinese food was takeout.

Brees felt enough heat from all the web and eventual TV coverage that he set the record straight in a tweet: "In case anyone still cares about this report, I tipped $3 on a takeout order. Had we sat down, it would have been 20% plus."

Eventually, the restaurant started feeling heat. It issued a statement apologizing to Brees and it donated more than $800,000 to his charity. The restaurant also said: "The receipt would indicate that Mr. Brees is a very generous individual. Takeout orders do not usually garner a tip at our restaurant."

A debate still continues about whether we're supposed to tip on takeout orders -- and, if so, how much?

We consulted with the etiquette experts at the Emily Post Institute in Vermont. They told us there is no obligation to tip on takeout orders, but they added -- you can if you want to, and it will be appreciated.
