DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

If the dead deserve dignity, Randy Lafever said they won't find it at Woodmere Cemetery.

While cleaning his aunt's headstone, he noticed several mausoleums, or more fittingly what is left of them. The mausoleums are severely damaged, stripped bare, open to the elements and vulnerable to more damage.

"I've always respected Woodmere Cemetery. I believed in Woodmere Cemetery. My aunt is buried here," Lafever said. "[However], to see all these mausoleums looking like this is absolutely ridiculous."

Fox 2 reported on scrappers and vandals hitting the mausoleums seven months ago, and it appears no repairs have been made.

Part of the problem is that a section of the cemetery's rod iron fence is missing, meaning anyone can walk in after hours.

The Midwest Memorial Group, which operates the cemetery, said four people were arrested and convicted for breaking into the mausoleums. A spokeswoman explained they have repaired the fence five times, but someone keeps tearing it down.

As for securing the mausoleums, the Midwest Memorial Group said that is not its responsibility because they are private property.

If you fear a loved one's mausoleum had been damaged, you are asked to contact Woodmere Cemetery.
