As a broadcasting student at Grand Valley State University, and a summer intern at Fox 2 News, I felt that this was news worthy. Students often think of ways to give back to their community, and as a student myself, I have recently become inspired.
'Our generation is widely regarded as a very reactive and lazy segment of society. The younger generation, in turn, is following in our footsteps since we are their biggest influence.'
These are the words of Erik Wright, a recent graduate of Madonna University and a friend of mine. Erik, together with his friend, IF Wear founder Jierah Dixon, decided to challenge that sentiment by teaming up and taking the initiative to help raise money for Children's Hospital of Michigan Foundation.
The duo had been looking for a way to give back to the community, and both Erik and Jierah thought that Children's Hospital of Michigan Foundation would be the perfect organization to get involved with.
"Nobody our age steps up and does something like this unless it's for school, or for someone else. We just want to show everyone that it's easy to start something like this and to raise awareness," said Wright.
Their fundraiser takes place during the annual Fall Fest event in Downtown Plymouth, September 6th-8th. During this three day event, the guys will be accepting donations, as well as running two raffles for various prizes with tickets ranging from $1-$10. They will also have a silent auction with signed Detroit sport team memorabilia, while also selling t-shirts from Jierah's IF Wear Clothing line for $20.
Prior to the September event, they hope to raise at least $1,500 from a donation page they created through You Caring, with $20,000 being their overall fundraising goal.
As I get ready to head back to school at the end of August to complete my final year of school, I am looking forward to my future and hope that one day I will make a difference in my community just like Erik and Jeriah have set out to do. I think they have shown all of us how easy it is to just get involved and make a difference.
I hope that you will share this story with others or make a donation to help this worthy cause. Any donation is appreciated and it's easy to give! Just log onto: youcaring.com.
