WARREN, Mich. (WJBK) -

A Taco Bell parking lot in Warren was the starting point Wednesday for hundreds of fast food workers who marched down Eight Mile demanding higher pay.

Fast food workers are frustrated.

"We can't raise our children off $7.40. It's hard to survive. You can't pay bills," said Shaniee Stitt, who works at the Taco Bell. "You can barely eat."

Workers point out that the average full-time fast food employee makes $15,392 annually compared to an estimated $200 billion in annual industry earnings.

Along with higher wages, workers also want better working conditions and the right to unionize.

"When we all come together, we can get things done," said protest organizer Rev. Charles Williams. "The change will come not just in Detroit, but all over this country."

The restaurant industry says higher wages would hurt job creation.

Protests are being held in seven states this week, including at more than 80 sites in metro Detroit and Flint.

This was not the first such strike in Michigan. Some workers at about 50 fast food restaurants in the Detroit area walked off their jobs in May as part of the effort.
