GROSSE POINTE, Mich. (WJBK) -

For the first time since 1979, the Grosse Pointe Woods-Shores Little League team is trying to lock up a spot in the World Series.

"The kids, they've got a great disposition. They don't get too high. They don't get too low, and in baseball you need to be right in the middle, and that's where these guys are," said Manager Tom Mazzola.

"The parents and the coaches are more excited than the players."

However, what this group of twelve- and 13-year-olds has done on the field has been spectacular. They won the state championship and are going to regionals in Indianapolis. The first game is Saturday.

"I didn't even think we would get this far," said Jimmy Mazzola. "Last year, we didn't even get out of districts, but this year we came along and we pulled it through."

"It's a once in a lifetime experience because we will never be able to play at this level again. So we have an extreme opportunity, and we hope to make the best of it," said Tyler Hills.

Four more wins separates the team from a trip to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

It is double elimination and there are six teams competing for one spot in Williamsport.

"I think we have a good chance. We have great pitching, and we can all hit," Jimmy Mazzola said.

Speaking of hitting and pitching, 6'2" twelve-year-old Chad Lorkowski is a big presence in the batter's box and on the pitcher's mound, where he said he is very confident.

Meanwhile, Tom Mazzola has been coaching this team for almost a decade, and in his final year at the helm, there isn't a better way to go out.
