I-Team: State cracks down on shady locksmith biz

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Georgia is cracking down on a locksmith company after allegations of them taking advantage of its customers. State officials say this particular company engaged in unfair and deceptive practices.

And that , the I-Team's Dana Fowle discovered, hit customers in their wallets.

It's worth mentioning that the FOX 5 I-Team is no stranger to locksmith companies. Like most businesses, the profession has its fair share of good and bad companies.

In this case against Atlanta Solution Locksmiths, state officials say it is sending a message to the trade that unfair business practices will not be tolerated.

The Governor's Office of Consumer Protection says that Atlanta Solution Locksmiths had 155 different Web sites misrepresenting its real location.

For example:  one would be called Cartersville Lock and Key another would be Locksmith in Marietta, Georgia. But all of the phone numbers went back to the Atlanta office.

Consumer Protection says the company advertised a 15-minute response time, but would leave folks stranded waiting for them for sometimes hours.

And, finally, the over-the-phone low quote jumped way up - the state says - after the work was nearly done.  Then, according to investigators, the customer felt so intimidated by the locksmith, that he or she would pay it.

In this settlement with Georgia, ASL does not admit any guilt, but does agree to pay more than $100,000 in restitution and penalties. The I-Team left a message for the company's owner, but never heard back.

Taking on a big bank, even over something like a minor bank error, can be maddening. You feel like no one is listening. It's like being trapped in a maze you can't get out of, but somebody is noticing how frustrating that can be.
