AARP objects to lack of land lines in Mantoloking, NJ

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - The AARP wants New Jersey regulators to investigate Verizon's plan not to bring wired phone lines back to one shore town badly battered by Superstorm Sandy.

The phone company is offering customers in the wealthy barrier-island town of Mantoloking only its Voice Link service, which uses traditional phones on a wireless network.

The technology cannot transfer data, so it's not compatible with Internet service, fax machines, security systems or medical devices that use phone lines. That's why the AARP is objecting to the Board of Public Utilities.

A Verizon spokesman says Mantoloking is the only New Jersey town where it's not repairing land lines after Sandy.

Verizon says about 100 customers are using the service and that others are using only cellphones or a cable company's voice service.

Under a plan being considered in Trenton, Belmar would be prevented from charging people $7 for beach badges because it accepted money from the federal government to replenish Belmar Beach and rebuild the boardwalk. The plan is raising concern because the badge fees help to pay for cleaning, lifeguards and police at the beach, according to News12.
