PHOENIX -

A 2-year-old boy found floating in a canal last week continues to fight for his life. Meanwhile firefighters spent part of their day working to try to prevent it from happening again.

Firefighters say a drowning or near drowning is the worst call they go on.

"Most drownings happen two and younger."

Braving triple digit heat, firefighters and police officers went door to door.

"Always keep an eye on your kids around water."

It's been four days after a 2-year-old boy fell in the canal and almost drowned. This officer jumped in and rescued him.

The little boy got into the canal by climbing through a hole in the rock wall around his apartment complex. Now police officers and firefighters are canvassing the neighborhood reminding parents to be extra cautious.

Some apartment complexes near 23rd Avenue and Indian School don't even have a fence separating the complex from the canal.

"I think they should have some kind of barrier or something more secure. It's so open," says resident Rachel Anchondo. "My husband has been out there doing work on his truck and kids from there have wandered off, he runs them back over here."

Firefighters say adult supervision is the best defense against drowning. Their message? Stay close, be alert and watch your kids around water.

Thursday's near drowning was the 23rd water related incident we've had in Phoenix this year. That 2-year-old is on life support in extremely critical condition.
