Social Media Helps Girl With Terminal Cancer Complete Bucket List

Posted: Updated:

Social media is giving voice to cancer patients like sixteen-year-old Lauren "Lola" Scott. She was diagnosed with undifferentiated soft tissue sarcoma in 2009, a terminal cancer.

But a few years ago, Lola became inspired by YouTube stars Zach Sobiech and Talia Castellano who were battling cancer. Both have sadly recently passed.

Lola started a Facebook page, then a YouTube page, a Twitter and then Instagram. She says people's messages give her strength and inspiration.

"It's a wonderful thing just putting it all out there and being vulnerable. It's a good type of vulnerable though. And just having all these people gravitate towards me, say such nice things. When I think of them it just makes me happy," says Scott,

Lola is one of nearly 70,000 people between ages 15 and 39 who are diagnosed with cancer each year. Yet, this middle generation is often forgotten.

Survival rates for teenagers and young adults has not changed in almost 30 years.

Matthew Zachary is the founder of Stupidcancer.org, a non-profit organization that empowers young people affected by cancer. He battled cancer when he was 21 and wishes he had social media at the time.

"This is a life changing experience, and it's difficult enough to be in that age group. So the idea of meeting somebody who has gone through that, that is your age, that gets what it's like… is transformative," says Zachary.

You can help Lola finish her bucket list by going to her website: Lovelikelola.com or twitter using the hashtag #lolasbucketlist.

Her biggest wish is to one day meet singer Demi Lovato.
