Enable of Georgia sowing seeds with special needs

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Planting trees and shrubs can be more than just a hobby or way to enhance curb appeal. It can also be used as a valuable therapy tool. Now, some Atlanta-area residents living with developmental challenges are taking advantage of this green opportunity.

Enable of Georgia has been helping Fulton County residents with developmental disabilities for more than 30 years.

"For the individuals that we serve with special needs, their sensory is very important."

"When they touch something, it makes them smile; or, when they smell something, it takes them to a different place."

This summer, they've partnered with Pike Nurseries for a little fun with a purpose: The fun! What else? Why, playing in the dirt – of course.

"These were tiny little seeds that you guys planted and look at them. They'll have flowers on them soon."

The purpose is not only to teach about plants, butterflies and birds; but, also to acquire real-life skills that will benefit each of them when they move on to building their own lives outside of the facility.

"They're very excited about gardening. Some of them have gardens at home. Some of them don't. But, we try to give them elements that they can bring home so that they can learn these skills and maybe incorporate it into their lives as well."

Kyle Galloway says he already has a bit of a green thumb, but is excited that's he still learning quite a bit at this weekly summer day camp.  He says they're lessons he plans to use in growing his own garden at home.

"Water and fertilizer, and then watching the plants and picking out the weeds."

"I think we all feel very fortunate that we get to come here every Thursday."

"I think we are getting just as much enjoyment -- if not more -- than the participants themselves."

Buck says he just might head back out this Thursday for Garden-to-Table Week. The group is planning take some of the goodies they've been growing during the last several weeks and eat them. It's another important lesson: enjoying the literal fruits of your labor.

This program runs every Thursday at Enable of Georgia's Roswell and Atlanta locations through August 1. Don't miss your chance to grow with them.

You've been hearing about it for a long time now – the advent of the self-driving car – and while it seems too like science fiction, the reality is that we are getting darn close.
