Women Get Hair-Raising Charity Event Of Their Own

Posted: Updated:

Ladies, would you go a month without shaving your armpits in the heat of summer? What if it was for a good cause?

Some women will be a little more hairy than normal next month – and they'll have sponsors urging them on – to help call attention to a condition called Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, or PCOS for short.

The first "Armpits4August" month-long charity event was held last year. The group that ran it reported raising 4,000 British pounds, or about $6,000.

And they're hoping to grow the event in 2013.

According to the National Institutes of Health, PCOS is a common hormone disorder that affects approximately 5 million reproductive-aged women in the United States.

Women with PCOS have difficulty becoming pregnant due to hormone imbalances. Another common symptom of this "poorly understood condition," the NIH says, is excess hair growth on the face and body.

Participants in Armpits4August are encouraged to keep a diary of experiences and submit creative entries for the event's zine. There's also a Twitter account, @Armpits4August, and a #Armpits4August hashtag.

It's not unlike an event for men known as "Mo-vember," during which men grow mustaches and grow funds for testicular and prostate cancers.

The website even offers "tips and how-to" advice for how to deal with the itchiness, smell, uneven growth and even dyeing.
