Atlanta takes driving lane for first city's cycle track

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Last week, the City of Atlanta took a big step toward making cycling safer. They installed the city's first cycle track, converting a travel lane for cars into a two-way bike lane.

But, it's a move that not everyone is cheering about. Some of the changes can be seen on 10th Street at Piedmont Park. A new cycle track bike lane reaches for a block from Monroe Drive to Charles Allen Drive and extending from the Beltline.

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed says he wants Atlanta to be a top 10 cycling city in three years. But, not everyone is excited about lanes being taken from drivers. And, there's concern that the deadline might be overly ambitious.

Proponents of the new cycle track say city resources are being used to foster greater health and fitness in the city. They also point to fewer vehicles on the roads and highways decreasing road congestion and air pollution.

While Atlanta aims for 2016 as a somewhat ambitious goal to get Atlanta into the top 10, the first test will likely be the cycle track, itself.

The track is a partnership with the city, Midtown Alliance and the Path Foundation. It was built in less than a week and the Path Foundation donors paid for the construction.
