People in Orange County Identify with Trayvon Martin

Posted: Updated:
Santa Ana, CA -

Several rallies are happening in Orange County in upcoming days, and people have are have more than just the Trayvon Martin shooting on their minds.  The anniversary of the shootings that led to Anaheim riot, is just days away.

Tuesday more than 100 people where at a candle light prayer vigil for Trayvon Martin in downtown Santa Ana.   Thursday, police are preparing for what's being called a Trayvon Martin protest, also in Santa Ana.  Conversations are becoming more heated on social media, nationwide.  The Santa Ana Police Department says they will keep a very close eye on the situation, but hope upcoming rallies will be peaceful too.

"Unfortunately, splinter groups, social media offers them opportunity to inject themselves into these situations and it kind of defeats the whole purpose.  These people are there to speak freely and do it in a peaceful manner," said Cpl. Anthony Bertagna, with the Santa Ana Police Department

Rallies were already planned in Anaheim on Sunday and Monday to mark the one year anniversary of the two Hispanic men that were killed by police, those shootings led to a riot.  The Trayvon Martin verdict is giving even more steam to those rallies, and there is concern those rallies could become violent.

"I can see the anger because they're tired of being victimized by police.   I mean those youngsters will have cell phone in their hand and police are saying, ‘Oh, it was a knife.' You know 14, 15 year old kids that they're intimidating.  And there's just so much of this going on throughout the United States.

Activists and members of the community who are part of the rallies say the Trayvon Martin shooting was racially motivated, just like they feel last year's police shootings in Anaheim were as well.

A round table is planned for Friday evening with the interim Anaheim Police Chief, to discuss policy changes within the Police Department, this after a year of tension between Hispanic Anaheim Residents and the Anaheim Police Department.

A rally is planned for 1p.m. on Sunday at Anaheim City Hall another is planned for Monday on Guinida Lane.

An NYPD plan intended to better connect with the community seems to have backfired. The police department asked its Twitter followers to share pictures of themselves with New York City police officers using the hashtag "myNYPD." Some did share nice pictures, but others decided to not "play nice, " sharing beating photos and more.
