Self-defense class held for young girls in Johns Creek

Posted: Updated:
JOHNS CREEK, Ga. -

A group of mothers concerned about their young daughters' safety says it pays for their girls to be prepared.

FOX 5's Lisa Rayam attended a self-defense held by officers from the Jones Creek Police Department.

Officers work in conjunction with parents to help teach the young girls how to protect themselves.

Lorena Riveros' 11-year-old daughter Nicole, and the other girls were exposed to some awful truths, such as the story of Jennifer Ewing, who lost her life back in 2006 on the Silver Comet Trail. She fought back and severely wounded the attacker.  Police arrested him after he went to a hospital.

The girls are taught simple techniques that could ward off any attack: say no, don't panic and act fast.

Officers offer a fewmore tips, including:

- Always follow yourinstincts.

- Someone too nice orsomeone who gives too much information when you first meet, should both raise ared flag.

Johns Creek policeoffers these classes periodically. Give them a call if you are interested.

The main takeaway? The girls go home empowered.
