Jersey Shore comeback with sand castle contest

MYFOXNY.COM -

Round the clock work and more than $800K in donations made it possible to repair the boardwalk in Belmar, New Jersey after superstorm Sandy and in time for the summer season.

One of the time honored traditions at the Jersey Shore town is the sand castle contest. The 27th annual competition got underway on Wednesday.

"It brings a lot of families, amateurs and professionals and a lot of kids from day camps. I encourage people to play hooky today and come to the beach," said Mayor Matthew Doherty.

One participant got an early start on the competition by digging a six foot hole for his sand castle.

The contest is open to participants of all ages.

Fish and wildlife officials are preparing to perform a necropsy to find out why a 30- to 35-foot whale was found dead in New York Harbor. A spokesman for the Army Corps of Engineers said Tuesday that the whale was found a few days ago. It has been moved next to a barge so that it does not disrupt ships' navigation.

There is not much relief in sight for allergy sufferers. Experts say a shortened spring due to the long winter may create a more intense allergy season.  Some allergists say they've already seen a noticeable increase in patients as the weather has gotten warmer.
