TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - A 10-year-old boy who was struck by a Pima County Sheriff's Department patrol vehicle has died.
The sheriff's office says Deputy Jesus Verduzco was responding to a call in a marked Chevrolet Tahoe when he hit the boy at about 4:45 p.m. Monday in Tucson.
The Tucson Fire Department says the boy was transported to the University of Arizona Medical Center, where he later died of his injuries.
Tucson Police Sgt. Marie Hawke says witnesses reported the boy was among a group of children who had been running back and forth across a roadway. She says the boy ran into the street as Verduzco approached, and the deputy swerved to avoid him.
Hawke says Verduzco stopped his vehicle after hitting the boy and rendered first aid. She says there was no indication that speed was a factor in the collision.
Verduzco has worked for the sheriff's office for five years.
