A-Rod Plays For Trenton Thunder In Reading

Posted: Updated:
READING, Pa. -

Embattled Yankee third baseman Alex Rodriguez gets a mix of cheers and boos as he enters the lineup for the Trenton Thunder against the Reading Fightin' Phils.

"Steroid user. Needs to stay out of baseball where he belongs," says a spectator.

He's one of the best players in baseball. And one of the most controversial.

"Now he's just fallen from grace in my eyes," says another former fan.

His rehab assignment with Trenton comes under a cloud of suspicion.

ESPN reported Rodriguez and as many as 20 players may soon be suspended for their involvement with a now-shut-down Florida anti-aging clinic called BioGenesis. a firm accused of distributing performance enhancing drugs.

This was something A-Rod wasn't talking about.

"I appreciate you asking that question," says A-Rod to FOX 29. "But due to the process we're not allowed to comment on that. But with due time we'll talk about that."

Rodriguez did admit he used performance-enhancing drugs between 2001-2003. The latest report has fans questioning whether he did it again.

"I think there's suspicion there. Where there's smoke there's fire is kind of the sayin," opines a man on the street.

Whether you love A-Rod or hate him, judging by the crowds here on a steamy summer Monday night, it's obvious people still want to see him.

"I want to keep faithful to him as a fan and the Yankees but at the same time you have to wonder if all those records should stand or not," reflects Alex Casantini, a Yankees Fan.

Fans showed up hours early to the ballpark and many stood for hours to try to get an autograph for what could be a future Hall-of-Famer.

"Is he a cheat? In baseball's eyes, yes. But I also think it's baseball's fault because they allowed it to happen," says Glenn Paper of Bensalem, PA.

As for Rodriguez, he's hoping the controversy will go away, although it's not likely to happen.

"I think the game is doing well and hopefully we can focus on all the great things going on," he says.
