Divvy bike-sharing system boasts 25K trips after only 2 weeks

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

In just two weeks, Chicagoans and visitors to the city have taken more than 25,000 trips on the Divvy bike share system bicycles, racking up an estimated 88,000 miles, the city said Friday.

Each Divvy station has a touchscreen kiosk, station map and docking system that releases bikes using a member key or ride code. Customers can purchase annual memberships or 24-hour passes, which allow riders unlimited trips in that period.

Of the more than 25,000 bike trips made from June 28-July 11, more than 6,000 were made by annual members, and 19,000 with 24-hour passes, a statement from the city Department of Transportation said. With 3,000 trips made on Saturday, July 6, each bike averaged more than four trips that day.

More than 2,500 Chicagoans have already signed up for annual memberships at DivvyBikes.com, CDOT said.

Divvy staff will begin to install new stations next week, ramping up from the current 70 to 300 stations and 3,000 bikes by the end of this summer. By next spring, Divvy will be in 400 locations with 4,000 bikes.
