Mall plan near Citi Field moves forward

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) - A proposal to build a huge shopping mall next to Citi Field has the blessing of the Queens borough president.

The Daily News reports that Helen Marshall gave her approval for the 1.4 million-square-foot mall. It would be built on what is now the baseball stadium parking lot.

She called for local hiring and increased input as the project moves forward.

The project still needs approval from the City Planning Commission and the City Council.

Marshall said the mall would transform "a blighted and underutilized area into a vibrant full-time retail, entertainment and residential community."

It's part of a larger, $3 billion revitalization of Willets Point.
