2-year-old girl hit and killed by car near Flagstaff
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -
A 2-year-old child was hit and killed by a car Monday, east of Flagstaff. Coconino County authorities said the girl ran into the street.
Deputies responded to the Doney Park subdivision late Monday afternoon on reports of a car vs. pedestrian collision.
A 2-year-old girl had been hit by a car. A deputy was the first to arrive at the scene and found the child lying in the roadway unconscious, with obvious signs on trauma to her head.
While a retired firefighter stabilized her head and neck, the deputy administered chest compressions. Medical personnel arrived and took over care of the child, and she was taken to the Flagstaff Medical Center by ambulance.
The 59-year-old driver of the vehicle told deputies she was driving north on Pioneer Valley Road at a speed of 25 mph. When she saw children playing in a residential yard next to the road, she slowed to 20 mph.
It was then that the girl reportedly ran from the opposite side of the road across the street. She was struck by the front, passenger side of the car.
The 2-year-old was pronounced dead Monday night.
At this time, no charges have been filed against the driver. The investigation is ongoing.
