Detroit City Airport air traffic controllers avoid layoffs

DETROIT (WJBK) -

Two months ago, the idea of flying into City Airport would've been a little bit scary. That was because the guys in the control tower were facing layoffs due to sequestration. However, they dodged that bullet.

You may be wondering what is sequestration. In technical terms, it's the automatic budget cuts brought about when President Obama and Congress reached a stalemate. In real world terms, it's what happens when the folks in D.C. just can't get their act together.

For travelers and pilots, sequestration meant flight delays, and air traffic controllers across the country expecting to be laid off by July. Layoffs would've affected hundreds of airports, increasing the risk of air disaster.

We don't know whether it was public pressure or members of Congress fearing that they themselves might get stuck on a runway, but for once Congress got together and did the right thing.

"In our hour of need, they responded well and found us the funding," said City Airport Air Traffic Manager Greg Williams.

City Airport General Manager Jason Watt said restoring the federal cuts does more than save air traffic controller jobs.

"It means we're going to continue to operate in a safe and efficient manner," he told us.
