CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Two men have been charged with the apparent gang-related murder of a man who was shot in the head on the Fourth of July and died a day later.

Tommie Harris, 25, and Quintion Humphries, 19, are each charged with one felony count of first-degree murder and one felony count of aggravated discharge of a firearm in connection with the death of Shavonte Howard.

At a hearing on Saturday, bond was denied for Harris, who Cook County prosecutors said was the shooter, and bond was set at $500,000 for Humphries, the alleged getaway driver.

Howard was shot in the head in the 5600 block of South Western Avenue about 12:20 p.m. Thursday, police said.

Prosecutors said at the hearing Saturday that Humphries drove alongside Howard's car, and flashed gang signs. Both cars turned east and a shot rang out. Howard then felt glass on his face and saw blood all over, prosecutors said. The gunshot went through his head, prosecutors said.

Howard died at 2:47 p.m. Friday at Mount Sinai Hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Harris, of the 5200 block of South Racine Avenue, and Humphries, of the 12000 block of South Loomis Street, were pulled over shortly after the shooting and police recovered a 9mm gun, prosecutors said.

Before he died Howard identified the shooter and the car that they were in, according to prosecutors.
