CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A Metra worker was struck and killed by a Metra Electric train Friday afternoon in the South Side Kenwood neighborhood.

A crew member was performing track work near 47th Street when a train fatally struck him about about 1:30 p.m., said Carolyn Tucker, director of external affairs for Metra.

A statement from Metra identified him as Luis Mercado, 36, a trackman who had worked for Metra since 2001.

Mercado was hit by train No. 223, which departed Millennium Station at 1:15 p.m. and was scheduled to arrive in Blue Island at 2:07, Tucker said. Trains on the line were delayed up to 85 minutes, according to Metra's website.

"The entire Metra family is deeply saddened by this tragic incident and the loss of one of our own. We extend our deepest sympathy and condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Mercado," the statement said.

The circumstances of the accident are under investigation, according to the statement.
