Counties have last say on raising speed limit

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Even if Gov. Pat Quinn signs a measure raising the speed limit to 70 miles an hour on Illinois interstates, the final decision may rest with county boards.

The governor has on his desk a bill to raise the speed limit, but has not decided whether to sign it.

Depending on what individual counties think, roads could end up with varying speed limits depending on what county a driver is in.

The Illinois Department of Transportation and the Illinois State Police have opposed the faster limit for safety reasons.
