6 drivers will face DUI charges in 7-vehicle I-75 crash

HAPEVILLE, Ga. -

Six motorists face driving under the influence charges for their roles in a seven-vehicle crash that closed southbound Interstate-75 lanes in Clayton County early Friday.

A pedestrian hit by one the vehicles triggered the multi-car wreck in the pre-dawn hours, according to a spokesperson for the Clayton County Police Department.

"It's one of those things where it's three o'clock in the morning, as everyone knows, the weather has been off and on with rain so the roadways are a little wet," said Clayton County Police Officer Danielle Rosa. "Once that first pedestrian was hit by that first vehicle, it started a domino effect."

Authorities say the pedestrian is charged with being in the roadway.

The crash happened on I-75 southbound at the Charles W. Grant Parkway in Hapeville.

"We don't know if they were leaving a party together, leaving a restaurant or if they even knew each other," said Rosa.

All southbound lanes at the crash site remained closed to traffic for a handful of hours Friday morning. Georgia DOT reopened the lanes to drivers just before 9 a.m.

As investigators look into the bizarre circumstances of the chain reaction crash, they hope it serves as a cautionary tale about drinking and driving.

"We want to recommend and really emphasize that you need to have a designated driver or have someone taxi you somewhere or even better, just stay at home," ," Rosa said. "Do not get behind the wheel and drink and drive because we will be there to lock you up."

The names of the people involved in the crash have not been made public.

Two people, including the pedestrian and a driver, remained hospitalized as of Friday night.
