NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Joey Chestnut downed 69 franks and devoured his own record in the annual men's Fourth of July hot dog eating contest.

The 29-year-old Chesnut, from San Jose, Calif., won his seventh consecutive Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest on Coney Island.

Thousands were at the contest, despite the heat and they say they wouldn't celebrate the fourth any other way.

It's not the Fourth of July unless Nathan's Hot Dog Eating contest is taking place on Coney Island – an event that's been going on since 1916.

"For this is a battle of the ages," said the Hot Dog contest announcer.

And despite the heat, tens of thousands gathered Thursday. First up to compete … the ladies.

A contest so close the so-called "Black Widow" wins by a single bite.

"And the winner is ... Sonya Thomas -- 37… 36 and 3 quarters to 36."

Fox 5 had to ask the 100 pound reigning champ – how does she do it.

"I drink a lot of liquid in my meals and stretch my stomach, daily. Speed, speed is more mental," said Thomas.

Then came the men.

World record eater Joey Chestnut had won this contest six times before. His goal was to devour his current record of 68 and by a single dog … he won again.

"A new world record Joey Chestnut!"

Now $10,000 richer and yellow mustard belt in hand, the slightly green yet gastronomically gifted Chestnut then spoke to the media.

"I feel a little full, I'm happy as heck," said Chestnut.

Eating like this is not an easy feat to watch or do. Many in the crowd were awed by it all.

"It's awesome, this is my first year here -- it's great," said one fan.

"It was very, very, very amazing," said another fan.

After a meal like this, Joey say his dinner Thursday night will not surprisingly be a liquid one.

"My dinner? Beer is for dinner," said a laughing Chestnut.

It's estimated that Joey Chestnut consumed a staggering 20,000 calories. With the beach just down the block, he could definitely swim some of that off.

"A mixed bag": That's how the Straphangers Campaign characterizes New York City subways; some good parts and some bad. For example, the C train breaks down most often, not surprising since the line has 50-year-old cars. But C trains were also the cleanest in the transit system.Straphangers said the worst subway trains were the IRT's No. 2.
