Desert Raves Too Close To The Fire Line: The Crackdown

Posted: Updated:

After our FOX11 Investigation last week into dangerous and illegal Desert Raves, the LA County Sheriff's Department took action.  Deputies cracked down on ravers, making arrests and seizing drugs.

One by one, the partyers were sent home angry their rave had been raided. Some were given citations others were arrested for possession of drugs.

Lt. Larry Gregg of the LA County Sheriff's Department said, "The intent is to stop this. We're in the middle of the desert. These parties tend to last 24 to 30 hours of alcohol and drug use and that becomes an issue."

Deputies learned of the rave dubbed "Intensity" because it was highly promoted on Facebook. It was held in the middle of the Antelope desert on Saturday night. Deputies showed up just as it was getting started. They stopped anyone headed in the direction of the rave and busted up the small group of desert hipsters already there.

The "Intensity Rave" wasn't the only one that was busted on the same night. With the help of the Cyber Squad at the LA County Sheriff's headquarters, deputies learned of another rave in the Apple Valley area also being promoted on Facebook. They immediately notified the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department.

Lt. Gregg explained to the ravers why LA County won't issue permits for Desert Raves, "They won't issue it because when you guys get to these things, you start doing Noz, you start doing ecstasy."

And that's exactly what our FOX 11 cameras found when neon-clad partyers were raving at the fire line of the recent Powerhouse fire. Kids were openly inhaling nitrous oxide commonly known as Noz. "They're lucky they weren't all killed during the brush fire. We're trying to protect people from themselves in these incidents,' said Lt. Gregg.

Since last September, the LA County Sheriff's Department says it has busted more than a thousand illegal drug parties that were openly advertised on social media. And almost all of them were shut down before they even started.
