GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) -

A weather balloon launched by a group from Michigan State University to capture images from high in the atmosphere rose to about 105,000 feet before plummeting back to Earth.

Instructor Troy Hale and the students launched the camera-laden balloon Sunday from Grand Rapids, capturing hours of video footage. The balloon eventually crashed into a West Michigan tree.

In part of the video, an image of the school's Spartan helmet logo is seen with the Earth in the background.

Hale says the launch is a "side project" to get students out of the classroom.

It was Hale's second such balloon launch. Last year, Hale and his students let loose a balloon in Detroit that went down in Lake Erie.
