Sarah's Fourth Surgery Went Well, Doctors Say

PHILADELPHIA -

After two lung transplants, Sarah Murnaghan had a fourth surgery since June 12, this one to repair her diaphragm.

Sarah's mother Janet posted a message on her Facebook page Tuesday evening after surgery, saying, "Sarah is still mostly sedated, waking periodically in pain, so aggressive pain management is underway. She has one chest tube back in place."

The hope with this latest operation is that Sarah, the brave little girl from Newtown Square, will soon be able to breathe on her own.

She has needed a breathing tube after the lung transplants because of a partial paralysis of her diaphragm during one of the surgeries.

It's been touch-and-go from the beginning, starting with her parents' fight to change transplant rules and get her on the adult list.

Doctors predicted Sarah would have died because no organs from child donors were available.

Sarah ultimately received the first set of adult lungs on June 12, but when they began to fail on June 15, she received a second transplant.

Sarah's mother Tuesday night ended one of her Facebook posts by saying, "So proud of her strength and determination. Sarah and her two donors are my heroes!"
