ATLANTA -

Rain is threatening several Fourth of July events. Event organizers across the area are making contingency plans.

Atlanta Track Club officials said that they are monitoring forecasts and have plans in case of a severe weather situation that could affect Thursday's Peachtree Road Race. Runners were told to be ready to go rain or shine.

At Lenox Square, crews have begun to prepare for the annual fireworks show. As of Tuesday afternoon, the fireworks show is still scheduled to take place as planned. However, if it appears that severe weather will move in, organizers hope to call it off early enough to alert the public.

Some cities have already cancelled or postponed planned events.

Just before 8 a.m. Wednesday, Acworth tweeted (@AcworthGA) that the Acworth Concert & Fireworks are rescheduled for July 19. Festivities are set to begin at 5 p.m.

The city of Lilburn has postponed its scheduled fireworks show until September 1.

"We were on the phone with vendors and residents and sponsors just getting everything in order," said Lilburn spokesperson Nikki Perry.

Previous Fourth of July fireworks shows have drawn more than 10,000 people to downtown Lilburn.

"It's such a huge investment from the community and by the city, and just the time and money that our sponsors have spent on this event…we want more than just a few people with umbrellas," Perry said.

Other cities are also changing plans, including Covington, where the big show will now be on July 6.

Brad Stewart owns Bradley's Bar-B-Que. He was planning to set up a tent on the square and sell about 800 barbeque sandwiches on the square during the festival.

"We had a lot of plans for Thursday. We had a full staff that was going to be in place, but we can't control Mother Nature," Stewart said.

Covington organizers say the majority of the vendors and musicians scheduled to perform were able to change their plans, including American Idol's Bo Bice.

Still, there's some disappointment that the Fourth will be a wash out, but organizers say it came down to safety.

Other cities, such as Marietta, are keeping a close eye on the forecast and will make a final decision on Wednesday.
