Rutgers University to merge with UMDNJ

Posted: Updated:
NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

Sunday at midnight, the largest higher education merger in U.S. history will take place in New Jersey.

The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) will end and seven of its eight schools will become part of a new, super-sized Rutgers University.

The merger means Rutgers University will have a student population of 65,000 and will rank among the top 25 research universities in the nation. Rutgers will also have a $3 million budget, with more research spending than Harvard, Yale or Northwestern University.

"What we've done is to create a powerhouse," said Rutgers President Robert Barchi, who was overseeing the last-minute details. "Nothing of this complexity has ever been done. And we have been able to accomplish bringing this to closing."

The transformation at Rutgers is designed to build up New Jersey's public universities and make the Garden State more competitive in acquiring research grants.

Rutgers estimates it will have to shell out as much as $75 million over several years to cover the one-time cost of merging with UMDNJ.

Boaters in Lake Hopatcong in New Jersey are keeping an eye out for an unwanted visitor lurking underwater: a 14- or 15-foot-ong snake, possibly a green anaconda. Several people have seen the reptile, which has probably holed up in a drain pipe. Reptile specialists are also searching the lake for signs of the snake. So far no more sightings have been reported.
