It is called petroleum coke, or pet coke for short, and tons of it are piling up along the Detroit River.  You can see it blowing in the wind, and there are worries it is blowing into our lungs and into the water.

DETROIT (WJBK) -

Protesters on Monday blocked a hauler carrying the controversial petroleum coke to a plant in southwest Detroit, FOX 2's Amy Andrews reports.

The protesters stood in front of the hauler outside the TransFlo Terminal on Jefferson and Rosa Parks. Detroit police were on the scene.

Petroleum coke, also called 'pet coke,' is a byproduct of tar sands oil refining.

State lawmakers including US Representatives John Conyers and Gary Peters, have called for an investigation into the dangers of pet coke. They want the state to ensure its being properly stored and does not pose a danger to area residents.

The protesters have several demands they'd like to see met, including:

1. Communities health, quality of life, environment, and Justice comes 1st.

2. Mayor Dave Bing: Shut down the docks and REFUSE to let petcoke into another community's backyard.

3. Create new forms of working and living that don't force folks to choose between a paycheck that puts food on the table and a job that jeopardizes the planet's ability to support life.

4. Local, State and Federal Governments DO NOT issue ANY permits that let corporations pay to pollute and put their profit before people & planet.

5. Stop the extraction, transportation, refinement, and burning of tar sands and transition beyond ALL FOSSIL FUELS and destructive forms of energy towards clean, renewable, local alternatives.

6. Wayne County Public Health Dept. provide access to FREE baseline blood testing for all those residing near areas contaminated by industrial practices.

7. Require Marathon and Koch Carbon to star a Community Health Fund to support anyone found to be adversely affected by exposure to petcoke and other industrial practices.

But a previous report from the Department of Environmental Quality states pet coke causes no immediate environmental or health threat. Those who are breathing it in beg to differ. While some of the mounds have been removed, neighbors say the dust is still blowing and more needs to be done.
