Expenses pile up for family of baby awaiting heart transplant

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

The parents of a 5-month-old boy are struggling to find the money to pay for the heart transplant he needs to live.

Josiah Barfield has a condition that requires three open heart surgeries, one which was held right after his birth.

"His left ventricle didn't fully form. We knew immediately he would have to have surgery right after he was born," said his mother, Lacy Barfield.

Little Josiah has spent most of his short life in the intensive care unit at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston.

Despite his hardships, Josiah still manages to smile.

"He is just a happy baby. You know, to have gone through as much as he has gone through already, he still smiles," said Lacy Barfield.

The couple already has more than $1 million in medical bills.  Their insurance is nearly capped.

"We were getting pretty close just with the heart surgery and the stay, let alone we have been in ICU for almost three months," said Lacy Barfield.

Friends and strangers have stepped up to help the family with prayer and fundraising plans.  A Facebook page has been set up for info on how to help.

The Barfields said they have found strength in their son's big blue eyes and in the lessons learned through challenge.

"You can do anything because you already, you have already done so much," said Anthony Barfield.

On Monday, a procedure will be held to see if Josiah is a candidate for the second open heart surgery he is supposed to have. That operation will provide him with more time to wait for the heart.

Donations can be made to any Wells Fargo Bank at the "Josiah Barfield Benefit Fund."
